Na’Ye Pérez’s Solo Exhibit
Pérez is a multidisciplinary Cuban-Haitian artist based in Brooklyn. His practice combines painting, drawing, and performance to explore the possibilities of Black resilience and intimacy. He holds an MFA in Painting & Drawing from Pratt Institute. Pérez was originally featured in the gallery’s inaugural group show The Privilege of Getting Together late last year and is one of the many impressive names on Báez’s roster.
Their Eyes Were Watching God is Pérez’s first solo show in New York and will run through February 13 of this year. It nods to Zora Neale Hurston’s novel in name and theme; in cadence with each of his solo shows being titled after literary works of Black authors. The exhibit embodies Black presence through quotidian activities— braiding hair, playing cards, taking a walk in Brooklyn— to harp on shared experience; and what it means to be a community, to bond, to create intimacy, to care, to build resilience, and to live life across geography.
Pérez uses materials from his own environment in his work: blunt wraps, discarded chip bags or candy wrappers, a pack of Newports, and so on as a living breathing memory of the work’s respective community. The vivid colors of everyday fashion, graffiti, and discarded flyers affixed to scaffold walls combine to inspire Pérez’s textured imagery. Their Eyes Were Watching God evokes a certain playfulness and vibrance juxtaposed with hidden symbolism of music, fashion, and Black history— emphasizing how Black perspective exists across space and time.
Speaking on his own work, Pérez underlines how he uses “day to day activities to literally embody and engage community [and] transform how art spaces should function, creating a visceral experience in tandem with physical art.” This mindset precisely mirrors the pillars of REGULAR•NORMAL as a space and concept. The gallery’s founder, Báez, defines this contemporary space of dialogue as, “A place where integrity, mutual support and respect keep pushing our human connections and artistry forward. We want to teach, educate and learn with openness and real dedication—without discrimination. We want to disrupt the long perceived status quo of galleries, museums and institutions. We aim to create a place where love, unity and transparency are reinforced day in and day out. A place where all of our efforts come together in the true sense of collaboration. Until they turn into a regular and normal thing. Our legacy starts now.”
